Unfortunately the plugin requires that permission in order to read the website content and block trackers.
I don't think anything has changed in that regard other than firefox making this more transparent.

It's a fact of life that you should probably only install addons that you trust since most of them can hook into the firefox api and read whatever data they want.
Ironically, you were okay when this process was opaque but now when you are warned about it, you no longer trust the same addons you supposedly did before.

This is truly an amazing ad blocker! I feel so much safer browsing the web with this Add-on!
