Privacy Policy for Aegis
Last Updated: 2025.03.06
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how the Aegis extension for YouTube processes and protects data, ensuring both user privacy and the security of the extension's operations. By using Aegis, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this policy.
2. Data Collection and Processing
Aegis collects and processes the following types of data:YouTube Video IDs: Used temporarily to retrieve AI-powered ratings and summaries.
User Preferences: Customization settings, such as selected rating categories, stored in the user's localStorage.
Optional OpenAI API Key: If entered by the user, stored securely in localStorage for personalized AI queries.
IP Addresses (for Rate Limiting Only): Temporarily stored to enforce fair usage limits and prevent abuse.
2.1 How IP Addresses Are UsedIP addresses are only used to rate-limit API requests and prevent abuse of the service.
IP addresses are not linked to any user account or personally identifiable data.
IP addresses are stored temporarily in a Redis database and automatically deleted after 24 hours.
Aegis does not track, log, or store IP addresses for analytics, advertising, or any other purpose.
3. Legal Basis for Processing IP Addresses (GDPR Compliance)
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Aegis processes IP addresses under the legitimate interest legal basis (Article 6(1)(f)), specifically for:Preventing abuse and ensuring fair usage of the extension.
Maintaining the stability and security of the service.
Users have the right to request information on whether their IP address is stored and to request its deletion if no longer necessary for security purposes.
4. Purpose and Use of Data
Aegis uses collected data exclusively to:Provide AI-generated ratings, summaries, and insights for YouTube videos.
Enable user customization for a better experience.
Improve the extension's functionality and ensure reliable performance.
Prevent abuse by rate-limiting excessive requests (IP address-based).
Aegis does not sell, share, or use collected data for advertising, tracking, or third-party analytics.
5. Data Storage and SecurityLocal Storage: User settings and API keys are stored locally on the user's device, meaning they are not accessible to Aegis servers or third parties.
Temporary Processing: Video IDs are stored permanently but are not linked to any user identity or personal information.
Secure API Calls: If a user provides an OpenAI API key, it is only used for real-time requests and is never transmitted to any entity other than OpenAI.
Redis Database (IP Addresses): IP addresses used for rate-limiting are stored temporarily and automatically deleted after 24 hours.
No External Tracking: Aegis does not use cookies, fingerprinting, or other tracking technologies.
- Third-Party Services
Aegis relies on the following services to function:
Aegis API (https://aegis.anemos.app): Used to fetch video ratings and summaries based on YouTube video IDs.
OpenAI (optional): For each query or video ID, Aegis makes API calls to OpenAI's services via the Aegis API to generate video insights. If a user provides their own OpenAI API key, the Aegis server processes the request using the provided key instead of Aegis' default API key.
Neither of these services collect personally identifiable information through Aegis.
7. User Rights and Control
Opt-Out and Data Removal: Users can delete all stored preferences and API keys at any time through the extension settings.
Minimal Data Retention: IP addresses used for rate-limiting are stored only temporarily and automatically deleted after 24 hours.
Transparency: Aegis is a proprietary project. While efforts are made to ensure clarity on how data is processed, the source code is not publicly available.
