About this extension
Anime4K Upscaler brings the open-source Anime4K upscaling and restoration shaders to Firefox. It runs them in real time on your GPU via WebGL2, directly on the video you are watching.
Old or low-resolution anime (480p, 720p, DVD-era releases, heavily compressed streams) gets sharper line art, less blur and fewer compression artifacts. Upscaled frames are drawn at your screen's native resolution.
HOW IT WORKS
- Enable it per site from the toolbar button (or Alt+Shift+A).
- When a video starts playing, the add-on processes each frame with the selected Anime4K shader chain on your graphics card and shows the result over the original video.
- Works with standard HTML5 players, including players embedded in iframes from other domains.
- Player controls and the site's subtitles stay on top and fully usable.
- Upscaling only runs when it is useful. If the video already matches your display resolution, only the restoration step runs.
PRESETS
- Mode A – Restore + Upscale: best for most anime.
- Mode B – Soft Restore + Upscale: for heavily downscaled sources.
- Mode C – Upscale + Denoise: for old, noisy 480p/DVD sources.
- HQ versions of each mode, for powerful GPUs.
- Upscale only / Restore only: lighter options for slower hardware.
The popup shows the input resolution, processed resolution and frames per second, so you can pick the right preset for your GPU.
REQUIREMENTS
- Hardware acceleration enabled in Firefox.
- A GPU with WebGL2 support (any reasonably recent integrated or dedicated GPU). HQ presets need a mid/high-end graphics card.
LIMITATIONS
- DRM-protected streams (Widevine/EME, e.g. Netflix) cannot be processed. Browsers do not allow pages or add-ons to read those video frames.
- Videos loaded directly from another domain without CORS headers are blocked by Firefox's security rules. Most streaming players are not affected.
- If a site puts the bare <video> element into fullscreen, rather than the player around it, the upscaled picture cannot be shown.
PRIVACY
The add-on collects no data and makes no network requests. All processing happens locally on your GPU, and settings are stored locally in your browser.
