About this extension
Navigating and participating in today's online landscape requires an unprecedented level of responsibility and discernment. The internet has transformed how we learn, communicate, and connect. It also exposes us—particularly the vulnerable—to evolving risks such as scams, exploitation, harassment, and other harm.

Digital safety systems have been established across platforms, reporting organisations, and public institutions to provide important safeguards, reporting pathways, and resources that help identify harm, support those affected, and enable appropriate action.

However, a rapidly evolving threat landscape requires these systems to increasingly rely on informed public participation. Whether equipped or not, people are expected to recognise threats, determine when and what action is appropriate, navigate multiple reporting pathways, and provide accurate information. Often in situations that are unfamiliar, stressful, or time-sensitive.

Tools that reduce this complexity by bringing together relevant guidance, trusted resources, and practical support can help make participation more informed, more consistent, and ultimately more effective.

BrightWard is an effective intermediary support layer between the user and the digital safety ecosystem, targeting social media. It's a privacy-first, local-first browser extension designed for parents, guardians, and other responsible adults who manage the devices in their care.

Key Features:

Custom keyword filtering – Build your own keyword list based on your household, circumstances, and priorities. BrightWard starts with no predefined keywords, giving you complete control over what the extension treats as signals to block.

Automatic content hiding – Matching content (text and media) can be hidden to help reduce exposure while preserving an incident record for later review.

Secure incident log – Create and maintain a private, chronological record of concerning online incidents, including notes and supporting information for future reference.

Action Center – Access recognised reporting organisations, platform-specific reporting pathways, and other resources from a single location.

Reporting support – Prepare organised documentation and maintain reference numbers from reports you choose to submit, making follow-up easier over time.

Guided by trusted resources – Brings together practical guidance, reporting information, and scenario-based resources to help users make informed decisions when concerns arise.

Privacy is fundamental to BrightWard's design. The extension does not transmit your data to external servers. Your keywords, incident records, and related information remain stored locally on your device and are protected by your master password.

The product currently has full functionality on the desktop web versions of X / Twitter, Reddit, and Instagram. We are working on integrating the desktop web versions of the Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube platforms. Signal-blocking features may not work equally as well across platforms. Given that social media platforms are in a constant state of change, future versions of this extension will seek to improve on its capacity to perform the aforementioned functions on all listed sites. The product will continue to undergo improvements, as well as expand its list to work on more social media platforms.

BrightWard is intended for use by a responsible adult on a device they own or manage. It is not a surveillance tool and is not designed to monitor individuals without their knowledge where doing so would be unlawful or unethical.

BrightWard does not replace informed judgement, open communication, or the safety systems already provided by platforms and public institutions. BrightWard exists to support those systems by empowering people to participate with greater clarity, confidence, and consistency while remaining in control of their own data.
