About this extension

CarboneWatch estime l'empreinte carbone de l'usage de l'IA. L'application de bureau reconnaît les services par leur adresse réseau ; cette extension voit ce que l'adresse ne dit pas.

Gemini est servi depuis les adresses de Drive et de Gmail, Meta AI depuis celles de Facebook, Copilot depuis celles d'Office. Par l'adresse, ils sont indiscernables du reste. Par le nom d'hôte, ils ne le sont pas — et seul un navigateur le voit.

L'extension sait aussi séparer la réponse du modèle du chargement de la page. Sur une heure réelle de ChatGPT dans le navigateur, la réponse pesait 0,2 % du volume transféré. C'est cette part qui compte, pas le total.

Ce qu'elle lit : l'adresse de chaque requête vers un service d'IA de sa liste, et le nombre d'octets que le navigateur publie déjà. Ce qu'elle ne lit pas : le contenu des pages, les réponses des modèles, ce que vous tapez.

Ce qu'elle fait de ce qu'elle mesure : elle le garde sur votre machine quarante-huit heures, vous le montre, et le remet à l'application CarboneWatch si elle est installée — par le mécanisme local des navigateurs, sans passer par le réseau. Aucun serveur, aucun tiers, aucune mesure d'audience.

Elle fonctionne seule, mais prend tout son sens avec l'application, disponible sur carbonewatch.fr.
