About this extension
Download Link VirusTotal Checker is an add-on that (like its name suggests) allows you to quickly check download links against VirusTotal’s extensive database, saving you time and from having to download (potentially infected) files beforehand.
When you right-click on any download link, the add-on fetches the file, calculates its SHA‑256 hash, and queries VirusTotal for an analysis. If an analysis exists, it opens the VirusTotal report in a new tab. If not, it submits the file URL for scanning and then displays the scanning progress in real time.
You will need an API key from VirusTotal. If you don't have one yet, please sign up to VirusTotal Community to obtain one for free.

Why "Access your data for all websites"?
For Enhanced Privacy and Security
If you are not actively checking download links, consider disabling this add-on. This minimizes potential exposure and conserves system resources. It might also just be a good idea in general to review the permissions of all your active extensions periodically and remove those that aren't in use or are excessively broad in their scope.

Key Features
- One-Click Analysis: Right-click on any download link to instantly check its reputation on VirusTotal.
- Automated Hash Computation: Automatically calculates the file’s SHA‑256 hash for an efficient security check.
- Real-Time Scan Progress: If a file isn’t in VirusTotal’s database, the add-on can submit the URL for scanning and display progress updates until the analysis is complete.
- User-Friendly Interface: Clear notifications and redirections help you keep track of your scan status.
Why "Access your data for all websites"?
- Universal Link Verification: To effectively check download links from any website, the add-on needs to fetch file data regardless of its source.
- Accurate Analysis: Fetching the file data in the background is essential for computing the file’s hash and querying VirusTotal’s API reliably.
- Flexibility: Without this permission, it wouldn't be possible to fetch file data from URLs outside of a pre-defined host whitelist, which wouldn't really be practical (this is unfortunately a limitation of Manifest V2, as more granular host_permissions are absent). No other data is collected or used other than what's required to send the hash/link to VirusTotal, and can be verified in the source files.
