Feed Shield for Facebook processes Facebook Home page content locally in the browser to identify and hide selected ads, suggestion posts, and sections.

Local settings

The extension stores Boolean on or off filter preferences in WebExtensions storage.local so selected filters persist between browser sessions. It also stores one local aggregate of posts hidden since version 2.6.0 was installed in the current browser profile. To prevent double counting, it temporarily stores each open tab's numeric browser tab ID plus random page-session IDs and the highest post counts seen in that tab. Closing or replacing the tab removes its temporary entry without reducing the aggregate.

No Facebook page content, account data, post identifier, post text, author name, URL, or diagnostic record is written to persistent storage. Estimated time saved is calculated from the stored post count at eight seconds per post and is not stored separately. The aggregate is local to the current browser profile, does not sync between browsers or profiles, and is removed when the extension is uninstalled.

Data collection and transmission

The extension does not transmit, collect, sell, or store user data outside its local extension settings. It does not send page content, browsing activity, settings, personal information, or usage data to the developer or any third party. It contains no analytics, advertising, remote code, or extension-originated network requests.

Facebook DOM-derived identifiers used to classify and deduplicate feed items remain in memory and are not persisted. Only the aggregate and temporary tab high-water values described above persist locally.

Optional diagnostics

Diagnostics is off by default and is not exposed in the current popup. If enabled through a retained local setting, it keeps a bounded in-memory record and writes sanitized structural, count, timing, and error-name information to the local browser developer console. It does not include post bodies, user or group names, full URLs, HTML, or media URLs. Diagnostic records are not uploaded and are cleared when diagnostics is disabled or the page session ends.

Permissions and site access

The extension requests the WebExtensions storage permission only to persist the preferences and local counters described above. Its packaged content scripts run on https://www.facebook.com/* so they can inspect the page DOM and locally hide matching ads and suggestions. Filtering is limited in code to the Facebook Home routes / and /home.php.
