Fidel — Amharic Phonetic Input (ፊደል) by Yihun Shekuri

Fidel is a phonetic Amharic keyboard. Type Latin letters and they become Ethiopic script (ፊደል) as you type, in Gmail, ChatGPT, Claude, Notion, Slack, and any other web form. Press Alt+A to turn it on or off.

1. Click the Fidel toolbar icon and leave the switch on, or press Alt+A.
2. Click a text field and type phonetically. Example: selam yihun becomes ሰላም ይሁን.
3. Press Alt+A again to type Latin.

• Alt+A or Alt+Shift+A: turn Fidel on or off
• Right-click selected Latin text and choose Transliterate Selection to Amharic (ፊደል)

Open the extension options to manage punctuation, Ethiopic numerals, smart spelling correction, a personal dictionary, and sites where Fidel should stay off.


Fidel does not collect or transmit what you type, the pages you visit, or your dictionary. Settings stay in your browser.

Firefox 140 or newer is required. Firefox for Android 142 or newer is supported.
