About this extension
Read real Japanese on the web, one sentence at a time.
Iyaku Japanese Reader turns any Japanese page into a reading lesson. Hover over a word, or tap it on a phone or tablet, to see what it means, how it's read, and which grammar the sentence uses.
What you get
- Meanings and readings: dictionary definitions, parts of speech, and every reading of a word.
- Grammar explanations: grammar patterns from JLPT N5 to N1 are recognized in each sentence, explained, and can be highlighted on the page.
- Kanji: the meaning, on and kun readings, and example words for every kanji in a sentence.
- Furigana your way: show it everywhere, only the first time a kanji appears, only in the popup, or not at all. You can also replace kanji with kana.
- Listen and translate: hear a sentence read aloud, or see a translation.
- Save and study: star words, sentences and kanji to review later. "Study this" opens a kanji's writing practice on iyaku.org.
- Send to Notebook: save a selection or a whole page to your Iyaku Notebook.
Works where you read
News sites, blogs, Wikipedia, and also Google Docs and online editors such as Notion and Superhuman Docs, without ever changing your documents. Turn it on for a site once, or just for the page you're on.
No account needed
Everything works right away, without signing up. Your saved items stay in your browser. If you want them on iyaku.org and your other devices, sign in with Google or an email link. Iyaku Plus members also get natural voices and better translations.
Private by design
Pages are analyzed on your own computer. Text only leaves your browser when you ask for it: to translate, to listen, or to sync what you've saved.
Built with the Sudachi morphological analyzer, the JMdict and KANJIDIC dictionaries (© Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, CC BY-SA 4.0), and Mozilla's Readability.js.
