I have allowed the permission for ProtonVPN to manage the setting so I don't know how it can be wrong. If I take away the permission it doesn't allow it to connect. Literally a fresh firefox install of the latest version. Connects to internet fine with no proxy or other funny business when turned off. Basically it looks like the thing connects and then breaks the Proxy settings to not use the tunnel."

I have Proton’s most advanced plan, including their full suite of services and the VPN. I’ve been using it for over a month and it works well. It does exactly what I expect from it.

Advice for those using Proton VPN on PC:
A small trick if you can protect more than one device with Proton. Exclude the browser from the software and let the extension handle the VPN. Your usage will be more flexible that way.
