Privacy policy

Cove makes simple software, starting with Slate, and is run from South Africa. This policy covers every Cove app. We collect only what the apps need to work, we never sell it, and there are no ads. You can reach us at hello@co-ve.digital.

What we collect
Your account. You sign in with Google, which tells us your name, email address, profile picture and Google account ID. We never see a password.
What you put in the apps. In Slate: your boards, groups and bookmarks.
The Slate browser extension. It sends us the pages you save with it (their address and title), and signs you in through Cove like the website. To show which pages you've already saved, it keeps a list of your saved addresses in your browser, so the pages you visit are not sent to us.
Payments. Pro is paid through PayFast, and your card or bank details go only to them. PayFast tells us whether each payment went through, the amount, its reference, a reference for cancelling renewals, and the name and email address you gave PayFast.
Technical basics. A sign-in cookie, and short error logs so we can fix problems. No advertising or analytics services.
How we use it
Only to run the apps: to sign you in, show your bookmarks on your devices, handle your subscription and reply when you get in touch. We don't build profiles of you.

Who else is involved
Google handles sign-in, from outside South Africa, so your name and email are processed there.
Google's icon service shows each bookmark's icon. Our server sends it only the website's domain, never who saved it.
The websites you save. When a bookmark has no title, our server visits the page once to read it.
PayFast processes payments.
Absolute Hosting provides the server in South Africa that the apps run on.
How long we keep it
For as long as you have an account. Backups are made every night and kept for up to 60 days. When you delete your account, everything is removed straight away, and from the backups within 60 days, except payment records: those are kept for tax purposes, detached from you and with your name and email removed.

Cookies and storage
One essential cookie, cove_session, keeps you signed in across the Cove apps for 60 days, renewed as you use them. Your browser also keeps your settings and a copy of your boards, so Slate opens instantly and works offline. The Slate extension keeps its sign-in and the list of your saved addresses in the browser's extension storage.

Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you and have it corrected, object to how we use it, export your bookmarks and delete your account (Slate: Settings, My account). If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa at inforegulator.org.za.

Security
Everything travels over encrypted connections, sign-in sessions are stored only in hashed form, and each account can only reach its own data.

Age
You need to be 18 or older to use Cove apps, or have permission from a parent or guardian.

Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update it here and change the date at the top. For significant changes we'll also let you know in the app.
