Developer comments
The new webextension format seems a bit more limiting in terms of what an extension can do, especially for what concerns UI modification, in particular i'd liked to be able to go to the previous tab by double clicking on the current tab (the tab itself, not the page) this however does not seem to be possible as also it does not seem feasible with a single extension to have more than one icon on the toolbar (eg: to add a back and forward set of buttons to navigate among tabs)
