Truthly is a browser extension that analyzes website content to help users understand the reliability of articles and online information. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how your data is used.
- Information We Collect
Truthly collects only the data necessary to provide the extension's core functionality. This includes:
1.1 Personally Identifiable Information
Email address
Collected when you sign up or log in to your Truthly account.
Used for account access, subscription management, and authentication.
1.2 Authentication Information
Password (transmitted securely during login, never stored by the extension)
Access token / refresh token / session token
Stored locally in the browser to authenticate requests to our backend.
Used solely for maintaining your Truthly session.
We never store or handle credit card numbers or payment details.
Payments are processed securely by Stripe on their website.
1.3 Approximate Location (Timezone Only)
The extension collects only your timezone (e.g., "Europe/London").
This is used for security, rate limiting, and preventing abuse.
No GPS, IP-based location, or precise location is collected.
1.4 Website Content (User-Initiated)
When you click the Truthly analysis button, the extension extracts and sends the following from the page you are viewing:
Article text
Title
URL
Optional metadata (author, publish date, etc., if available)
This data is used only to generate reliability and bias analysis.
We do not collect or monitor your browsing history.
1.5 Device Information
To prevent abuse and enforce rate limits, Truthly generates a hashed device identifier using:
Screen resolution
Timezone
Language
Platform/OS
Hardware concurrency
Canvas/WebGL fingerprint
This information is hashed and cannot identify you personally.
It is never used for advertising or tracking across websites.
1.6 Usage Data
To manage subscription tiers and API quotas, we collect:
Word count of processed content
Which endpoint was used
Your subscription tier
This is used only for service operation and billing integrity.
1.7 Optional User Feedback
If you submit feedback, we collect:
The feedback text
The page URL (for context)
A timestamp
This data is optional and user-initiated.
2. How We Use Your Information
Truthly uses your data solely for the following purposes:
To authenticate your account

Tokens and minimal user info are stored locally using chrome.storage.local.
