VIUko Browser Extension – Privacy Policy
Effective date: May 17, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how the VIUko browser extension handles information when it connects your browser to the locally installed VIUko desktop app.
VIUko is designed to hand eligible browser downloads to the VIUko desktop app so you can review, queue, and manage downloads outside the browser. The extension is not designed for advertising, analytics, profiling, cross-site tracking, or behavioral tracking.
This policy applies to the VIUko browser extension for Chrome and Firefox. It also describes the information the extension may send to the local VIUko native messaging host and the VIUko desktop app during a download handoff.
This policy does not cover websites you visit, files hosted by third parties, browser services operated by Google or Mozilla, or third-party services outside VIUko.
- How VIUko Download Handoff Works
When browser handoff is enabled, the extension may detect an eligible browser download and send selected download-related information to the locally installed VIUko desktop app through the VIUko native messaging host.
The VIUko desktop app uses this information to show a download confirmation or start dialog, so you can review the download before VIUko handles it.
The extension does not send the contents of the downloaded file to VIUko. If you confirm the download in the desktop app, the VIUko desktop app may connect to the original download source to retrieve the file.
- Information the Extension May Handle
When handoff is enabled and a download is eligible for VIUko intake, the extension may send the following information to the local VIUko desktop app:
* Download URL
* Original URL, when available
* Suggested filename
* MIME type
* File size or total bytes, when available
* Referrer, when available
* Browser download ID, when available
* Browser-reported download danger status, when available
* Whether the browser reports the download as incognito or private, when available
* Browser name
* Extension ID
* User agent
* Tab URL and page title, when available
Some of this information, such as URLs, filenames, referrers, tab URLs, or page titles, may reveal personal information depending on the website, file, or page involved. VIUko uses this information only for the download handoff and intake workflow described in this policy.
- Information VIUko Does Not Send
The VIUko browser extension and VIUko desktop app do not send the following information to VIUko or any remote VIUko server:
* Raw cookies
* Authorization headers
* Full request headers
* Passwords
* Payment information
* File contents
* Analytics events
* Advertising identifiers
* Persistent tracking identifiers
* Browsing history unrelated to the selected download handoff
VIUko does not sell personal data and does not use personal data for advertising, behavioral profiling, or cross-site tracking.
The extension only sends the selected download metadata described in this policy to the locally installed VIUko desktop app through native messaging, and only when browser handoff is enabled.
- Consent and User Control
Browser download handoff is disabled until you allow it.
On first install, the extension opens an onboarding page that explains what information may be sent to VIUko for download handoff. If you choose Allow Handoff, the extension may send selected download metadata to the local VIUko desktop app when it detects an eligible download.
If you choose Not Now, browser downloads continue normally and the extension does not send download metadata to VIUko for handoff.
You can return to the onboarding page from the VIUko extension toolbar button to review or change your handoff choice.
- Native Messaging
VIUko uses the browser’s native messaging API to communicate with the local VIUko native host named: app.viuko.native_host
The native host is installed separately by the VIUko desktop app. It receives download intake messages from the browser extension, validates them, and forwards accepted requests to the locally running VIUko desktop app.
If the VIUko desktop app is not running, the native host is unavailable, the intake request is rejected, or the handoff times out, the extension leaves the browser download untouched.
- Local Storage
The extension stores your browser handoff consent choice in local extension storage. This setting is used only to decide whether the extension is allowed to send eligible download metadata to VIUko.
The extension does not use local extension storage to build a browsing profile.
The extension does not persist raw cookies. The browser and the VIUko desktop app may maintain their own download records according to their separate settings and functionality.
- Data Sharing and Remote Transmission
The extension sends selected download metadata to the locally installed VIUko desktop app through native messaging.
The current browser handoff flow does not transmit that metadata to a remote VIUko server.
VIUko may disclose information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or a valid government request.
When you confirm a download in the VIUko desktop app, the desktop app may contact the original download source or related network locations as necessary to download the file you requested. Those third-party websites or servers are not controlled by VIUko and may process requests according to their own privacy policies.
- Remote Code
The VIUko browser extension does not execute remotely hosted code. The extension’s JavaScript, HTML, CSS, images, and other extension resources are bundled with the extension package.
- Security
VIUko treats browser extension messages as untrusted input. The native host and desktop app validate incoming messages before acting on them.
No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure. VIUko limits browser handoff data to the information needed for the download intake workflow and avoids collecting unrelated browsing activity.
- Changes to This Policy
VIUko may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.
If the extension adds new data handling behavior, VIUko should update the extension listing, consent UI, and this Privacy Policy before releasing that change.
