Privacy policy for VOCODEX Browser Extension
VOCODEX Browser Extension by C043
Vocodex Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 16, 2026
Vocodex is an open-source browser extension that reads web pages aloud using a Vocodex server. This policy explains what data the extension handles.
What the extension reads
The extension is off on every page by default. It reads a page only after you switch it on for that page from the extension window. It has no access to the sites you visit until then. Once switched on, it reads the text of that page so it can be spoken and highlighted.
Where the data goes
To turn text into speech, the extension sends the text of the page, and the voice you picked, to the Vocodex server whose address you entered in the Server field. By default this is a server on your own computer (http://localhost:8000). Vocodex is self-hosted: the server is run by you or by whoever you choose to trust, not by the developer of the extension.
The Vocodex server currently creates the voices with Microsoft Edge's online text-to-speech service. For that, the server sends the text to Microsoft. Microsoft's own privacy terms apply to that service.
The extension sends nothing to the developer. It has no analytics, no tracking, no ads, and it does not sell or share any data.
What is stored
The extension stores only its settings: the server address, the voice, the speed and the auto scroll choice. They are kept in your browser's extension storage, on your device. They are deleted when you remove the extension.
The extension does not store the pages you read, your browsing history, or any personal information.
Permissions
- activeTab and scripting: to read the page you switched the extension on for, and only that page
- storage: to keep your settings
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published with the next version of the extension.
