About this extension
WhatsApp Unread Counter adds a live message badge directly onto the WhatsApp Web icon pinned in your Firefox toolbar — so you always know when a new message arrives, without sound, without switching tabs, and
without the notification banner getting in your way.

The problem it solves

If you use Firefox with the sidebar in autohide mode, the sidebar panel expands over the browser chrome when you hover it, covering the tab bar entirely. This means you can no longer glance at the WhatsApp Web
tab to see its unread count — the tab is hidden behind the sidebar. You are left with no passive way to know whether someone has messaged you.

On top of that, if you have muted WhatsApp — either because you work in a shared space, prefer silence, or simply find the notification sounds disruptive — you lose the one remaining signal that something
needs your attention. The browser tab title updates silently, but again, you cannot see it when the sidebar is open.

How it works

WhatsApp Web already tracks your unread message count and reflects it in the browser tab title, for example "(8) WhatsApp". Crucially, this number already respects your muted conversations — muted group chats
do not inflate the count. This extension reads that number in real time and displays it as a badge on the WhatsApp icon sitting in your toolbar.

The toolbar sits above the sidebar, always visible regardless of whether the sidebar is open, collapsed, or in autohide mode. The badge updates instantly the moment a new message arrives, and clears itself
when you have read everything. No clicks required, no tab switching, no sound needed — just a number you can see at a glance from anywhere in the browser.

Privacy

This extension reads only the page title of WhatsApp Web. It does not access your messages, contacts, or any other data. Nothing is collected, stored remotely, or transmitted anywhere. All processing happens
locally in your browser.

You can shorten it on submission if they have a character limit, but this covers everything for the full description field.
