About this extension
Type with your voice in any text box on the web. Free, private, no account.
Click into a text field, press Alt+Shift+Y (or click the Yap icon) and talk. When you pause for a moment, or press the shortcut again, your words are typed right where the cursor is. It works in ordinary text boxes and rich editors on any website: email, search, chat, notes and documents.
Recognized on your device. Yap Voice Typing runs OpenAI's Whisper speech model inside your browser. Your voice is never uploaded: there is no server, no account and no analytics. The model downloads once (about 80 MB) and is stored by your browser, so dictation keeps working offline afterwards.
What you get
- Voice typing in inputs, text areas and rich text editors, which see the words as if you had typed them
- English, or "Any language": the multilingual model detects which of 99 languages you speak, per recording
- Clean text: capital letters, punctuation, and "um" and "uh" removed
- A small on-page indicator shows when Yap is listening and when it is typing
- Ends by itself after a short pause, or when you press the shortcut again. Esc cancels
- Up to 2 minutes per recording, as many recordings as you like
- Pages that draw their own text (some online document editors) get the words on the clipboard with a "press Ctrl+V" note, so nothing you said is lost
- Change the shortcut any time in Firefox: Add-ons and themes, the gear menu, Manage Extension Shortcuts
Private by design. Yap only reads a page when you press the shortcut or click the icon, and only the tab you are in. The microphone is on only while you dictate. Nothing you say or type is stored or sent anywhere.
