ET Lens is a browser extension from The Economic Times, published by Times Internet Limited ("we"). It finds company names, stock symbols, indices, brands and business terms on the pages you read, so you can hover them for ET prices, explainers and headlines.
- SUMMARY
- Names are found on your device. ET Lens reads page text inside your browser to find names. The page itself, its address and your browsing history are never sent to us.
- We receive only what is needed to answer you. When you hover a name, ET Lens sends that name or term to The Economic Times to fetch its data.
- No account, no tracking, no ads. ET Lens has no sign-in, sets no tracking cookies, contains no third-party analytics or advertising code, and does not sell or share data.
- WHAT STAYS ON YOUR DEVICE (never sent to us)
- Text of the pages you visit: read in memory to find names to underline; not stored.
- Your Google search query: read in memory to decide whether to show the ET panel; not stored.
- Settings (on/off, sites you have turned off, alert options): kept in browser extension storage. If you use your browser's sync (for example Firefox Sync), your browser may sync these settings across your own devices.
- Companies and topics you follow, your interest profile (names you have read about or hovered, with a score that fades over time) and the saved Morning Brief: kept in browser extension storage on this device.
- Recent ET responses (prices, headlines): kept in temporary storage that is cleared when the browser closes.
Alerts are shown with your browser's own notifications and are created on your device. - WHAT IS SENT TO THE ECONOMIC TIMES
ET Lens contacts only Economic Times servers (economictimes.indiatimes.com, etsearch.indiatimes.com, json.bselivefeeds.indiatimes.com, etmarketsapis.indiatimes.com, etpwaapi.economictimes.com). Requests carry no ET cookies or login. - When you hover an underlined name: that name, symbol or term (for example "hdfc bank", "MAXHEALTH" or "repo rate"), to fetch its price, explainer and headlines.
- When you search on Google with the panel switched on: only the company name picked out of a share-price search (for example "suzlon" from "suzlon share price"), or a fixed topic name (for example "income tax"). Your full search is never sent.
- For things you follow: ET's company IDs and names for followed companies and the names of followed topics, to check prices and news for alerts and the Morning Brief.
- For the Morning Brief and "For you": requests for ET's top stories and news for the names in your brief.
Like any website, ET's servers also receive standard connection information with each request, such as your IP address and browser type. Requests contain no ID or account that links them to you.
NEVER SENT: the content or address of the pages you visit, your browsing history, your full search queries, your interest profile, or the text you type.
When you click a link in ET Lens, you go to the Economic Times website. Those links include tags such as utm_source=etlens so ET can count visits from the extension. On the website, the Economic Times privacy policy applies, including its use of cookies: [link to ET privacy policy]
- PERMISSIONS
- Read pages on all websites: to find and underline names on any page you read. Matching happens on your device. ET's own websites are excluded.
- Access to Economic Times servers: to fetch prices, explainers and headlines.
- Storage: to keep your settings, follows and interest profile in your browser.
- Alarms: to check followed companies every few minutes and prepare the 8:30 am Morning Brief.
- Notifications: to show price, news and Morning Brief alerts.
- Active tab: to show in the toolbar popup how many names are on the current page.
- YOUR CHOICES
From the ET Lens toolbar popup you can turn ET Lens off everywhere or on a single site, turn off the Google search panel, turn off personalisation or clear your interests, unfollow companies and topics, and turn alerts or the Morning Brief on or off. Removing the extension deletes everything it stored in your browser. - SHARING, RETENTION AND SECURITY
We do not sell, rent or share ET Lens data with advertisers or other third parties. ET Lens has no user accounts, so we hold no profile of you. Requests reaching ET's servers are handled like other requests to Economic Times services, under the Economic Times privacy policy, including how long server logs are kept. All requests use encrypted HTTPS connections. ET Lens contains no remote code: everything it runs is in the published package. - CHILDREN
ET Lens is meant for general audiences and does not knowingly collect information from children. - CHANGES
If we change what ET Lens collects or sends, we will update this policy and its date before releasing that version. - CONTACT
