What!? Privacy Policy
What!? runs entirely in your browser. It has no server, no user accounts, no analytics and no tracking.
What is sent, and when
Nothing is sent until you choose to explain a selection (by tapping "? Explain", clicking the "?" bubble, using the right-click menu or the keyboard shortcut). At that moment:
• Without an API key: the text you highlighted is sent to Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org, operated by the Wikimedia Foundation) and, for single words, to the Free Dictionary API (api.dictionaryapi.dev) to look it up.
• With your own Claude API key: the text you highlighted, about 1,000 characters of the text around it, and the page title are sent to Anthropic's Claude API (api.anthropic.com) using your key, so that it can explain the text in context.
These services receive the request as they would any web request and handle it under their own privacy policies (Wikimedia: https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Policy:Privacy_policy ; Anthropic: https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy). What!? does not send the address of the page you are on, your browsing history, or anything else.
What is stored
Your settings (API key, chosen models, and whether to show the Explain button) are saved in your browser's extension storage on your device only. They are never sent anywhere, except that your API key is included in requests to Anthropic, as required to use it. Uninstalling What!? deletes them.
