- Rated 5 out of 5by ANGRYfox25, 3 years agoIf you're learning Japanese but find it scary to read it on the internet, fear no more. This extension is a must have for learners as it doesn't interrupt your reading experience and saves a lot of time form having to look up the definition yourself. Its like that friend who you can ask whenever you forget a word or don't know something.

posted 3 years agoThank you so much! We should use that last line as our tagline 😉 - Rated 5 out of 5by haystreet, 3 years agoCould at least give a heads up if it's going to download a 400 MB dictionary file in the background. Doubled my FF portable size. Kept deleting cache thinking I had a virus or something.

posted 3 years agoThank you! That's very generous of you to give a 5 star review despite your concerns about the download size.
The download size is only about 14Mb but once that gets decompressed and stored in IndexedDB it swells to over 300Mb on disk. It seems like the IndexedDB indices are particularly large and at some point I hope to find a way to reduce them somewhat.
The up-side is that by storing the data in IndexedDB Rikaichamp uses much less memory when it is running and can be kept up-to-date by just downloading the changed records each week which is normally only a few kilobytes.
Sorry about the alarm it caused you though! - Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 13515138, 3 years ago

posted 4 years agoThank you so much! I'm so glad Rikaichamp is proving helpful with your learning! - Rated 2 out of 5by Firefox user 14380695, 4 years agoThe app is great, but looking more carefully at the permissions, I'm only using it very selectively, ie, only activating it when needed. The kind of access signed away lets it vacuum up far too much data. It's free, and this defrays the cost, but the type of data is so totally unrelated to it's task.

posted 4 years agoHi! Thank you for your review. Which permissions are unnecessary?
Unfortunately, in order for Rikaichamp to be able to present pop-ups on the page it requires access to that page's contents. Web extensions do not provide any more fine-grained permissions that that. As far as I can tell, it's impossible to create a pop-up dictionary with fewer permissions.
The source code is available for audit and/or forking if you are concerned about misuse of those permissions. - Rated 5 out of 5by dirtbaggins, 4 years agoRikaichamp is everything I want in a pop-up dictionary, and I've been using it for over a year. I just downloaded Firefox Nightly, so I can use Rikaichamp on my Android phone once again! Thanks for making my life easier. ありがとうございました!

- Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 15739489, 4 years agoThanks for that great app, it's best of best. I didn't even expect pitch hints. Mindblowing!
But is it possible to install dictionary for different language, russian, for example?Developer response
posted 4 years agoThank you so much for your very kind words! There's no possibility to install other dictionaries at the moment but I hope to release a version that includes Russian definitions for a lot of the words in the next month or two. - Rated 5 out of 5by Jojo, 4 years agoThis add-on is very VERY helpful for me to study Japanese. I wish I had known this add-on years ago. Thank you so much Brian san!

That is a great encouragement to know that this add-on is helpful to you! - Rated 5 out of 5by Koyama, 4 years agoThis is a great add-on for reading Japanese texts, and it so helpfully provides the pronunciations of/notes on person/place names. Can not wait for something like it on Android! Thank you so much for creating this!
- Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 15013042, 4 years agoThank you for this outstanding pop-up dictionary, it is a useful tool for Japanese learning like me. Recently I also installed Yomichan (similar like yours). In Yomichan I can copy the dictionary's explanation. I wish Ricachamp can do the same job too.
Developer response
posted 4 years agoHi! Thank you very much! You can copy dictionary explanations by pressing the "c" key when the popup is showing. Then you can press "c" again to choose which entry to copy followed by "e", "t" or "w" depending on which format you'd like to copy in. - Rated 5 out of 5by Hachisa, 4 years ago

- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 14117558, 4 years agoI wish i could change the size of the font and bubble, the space between rows.
Developer response
posted 4 years agoThank you for your feedback! (For a very quick fix for the font size, you can use Ctrl and + to increase the font size of the entire page which will also increase the size of the popup.) If you are able to file an issue on GitHub with more details that also would be very helpful: https://github.com/birtles/rikaichamp/issues - Rated 5 out of 5by WebFreak, 4 years ago
