- Rated 4 out of 5by John Doe, 3 days agoI just tried this again after noticing that there was an update regarding permission management. Unfortunately, the result is disappointing—maybe even concerning for me.
Steps I took:
Firefox Add-on Page > Permissions & Data > “Access your data for all websites” → Unchecked, but it automatically re-checks after refreshing.
Summarizerrrr > Settings > FAB Domain Control → Set to Allowed Sites Only → youtube.com.
Summarizerrrr > Settings > General > “Access your data for all websites” → Unchecked. It stays unchecked for about 5 seconds, then automatically re-enables after refreshing.
I also tried unchecking both at almost the same time, but both permissions reactivate after a refresh.
As someone who was a victim of a previous add-on on the Firefox Add-on Store that requested “access to all sites” and was open-source, I cannot safely use this add-on. It’s really unfortunate because I genuinely love Summarizerrrr.
I know other trusted add-ons (MAL-Sync comes to mind for now; I’ll update this review with more intrusive ones after I check them) that are actually more functionally invasive than Summarizerrrr. However, they don’t list “Access to all data” under Required Permissions on their add-on page. Instead, they offer an optional “Access to all data” permission, which only activates if you explicitly grant it—and if granted, they can indeed access data on all websites. Why can’t Summarizerrrr adopt the same approach?Developer response
posted a day agoThank you so much for this incredibly detailed and valuable feedback.
I spent today investigating this issue thoroughly. To give you some context, the broad permission was originally implemented to support the FAB (Floating Action Button) injection on mobile browsers and desktop browsers that lack native Side Panel support (like Arc, Dia, etc.).
However, your review pushed me to find a better solution. I have now refactored the code to separate the logic for Firefox and Chromium-based browsers.
In the upcoming Version 2.5: The extension will no longer require "Access data for all websites" by default.
It will only request specific permissions for core supported platforms (YouTube, Udemy, Coursera, Wikipedia, Reddit).
Access to other websites will be strictly optional, only activated if you explicitly choose to use the tool on those specific pages.
I hope this update restores your trust in Summarizerrrr. Thanks again for helping me make this extension better!
