Duo New Tab does not sell or share personal data, and its developer receives no data from it. The extension contains no analytics, no advertising and no tracking code, and has no account or sync server. The duotab.app website uses Google Analytics to count visits (see "Google Analytics (website only)" below). This policy covers Duo New Tab from the Chrome Web Store, Edge Add-ons and Firefox Add-ons alike.
WHAT IS STORED, AND WHERE
The following is saved only on your device, in your browser's local extension storage and the new tab page's local storage:
• your shortcuts (name, web address, icon and color), folders, and the layout of your pages and dock
• your widgets and their content (notes, reminders, countdowns, chosen cities)
• your calculator history and Math Notes
• your settings, and any wallpaper photos you upload
• how often you open each shortcut, used only to suggest apps in Search
• how many new tabs you have opened and whether you have rated Duo New Tab, used only to decide when to ask for a rating
• whether Duo New Tab has asked you to share it, so it asks only once
• the size and position of app windows such as Notes, Reminders and Settings
• a cache of icon addresses, and your last weather location and forecast
This data never leaves your browser unless you export it yourself with "Export Backup", which downloads a file to your computer.
ONLINE SERVICES DUO NEW TAB USES
App Store icons (Apple): when "App Store Icons" is on (the default), Duo New Tab asks Apple's App Store search service (itunes.apple.com) for the app that matches each shortcut. It sends that app's public App Store id, or the shortcut's name as a search term. The icon image is then loaded from Apple's image servers (mzstatic.com).
Site icons (Google and the site itself): when "Site Icons" is on (the default), shortcuts without an App Store icon show the site's own home-screen icon, requested from that website, or its favicon from Google's favicon service, which receives the site's domain.
Weather (Open-Meteo and BigDataCloud): the Weather widget shows the forecast for your location or for a city you choose. In "My Location" mode, Duo New Tab by default asks BigDataCloud for your approximate city, which it works out from your internet address, and sends those approximate coordinates to Open-Meteo for the forecast. Duo New Tab never asks for your precise location by itself: only if you press "Use Precise Location" in Settings and allow it in your browser's prompt, your device's position is sent to Open-Meteo for the forecast and to BigDataCloud to name the place. You can withdraw this at any time in your browser's site settings. If you choose a city, its name is sent to Open-Meteo to find it. Your location is cached on your device and refreshed every few hours.
Search: when you type in the search field, your query is handed to your browser, which opens it with your default search engine under that search engine's own privacy policy. The Web Search widget does the same with "Browser Default"; with another engine chosen in the widget, your query is opened on that engine's website, just as if you had searched there. Large Web Search widgets show your recent searches: they are kept only on this computer, never sent anywhere, and can be turned off or cleared in Settings › Apps › Web Search.
Rating and feedback: after you have used Duo New Tab for a while, it may ask whether you would like to rate it. If you tap a star, or choose "Rate Duo New Tab" or "Send Feedback", Duo New Tab's page on the store you installed it from opens in a new tab. Nothing is sent before you choose, and the star you tap is not recorded or sent: you give your rating on that store, under its owner's privacy policy (Google, Microsoft or Mozilla).
Sharing (X, Facebook, WhatsApp, Reddit, LinkedIn, Telegram): once, after a while, Duo New Tab may ask whether you would like to share it; you can also choose "Share Duo New Tab" in Settings. The share buttons send nothing by themselves: tapping one opens that site's own share page in a new tab, filled in with a link to Duo New Tab's store page (in Firefox, its Firefox Add-ons page). Mail opens your email app with the link, and Copy Link puts it on your clipboard.
As with any web request, these services receive your IP address and handle requests under their own privacy policies. Your browsing history, page content, notes and reminders are never sent anywhere.
THE TOOLBAR BUTTON
When you click the Duo New Tab button in your browser's toolbar, it reads the address and title of the tab you are on, only to fill in the "Add to Duo New Tab" form. Nothing is read until you click the button, and nothing is saved or sent unless you add the shortcut.
OPTIONAL PERMISSIONS
• Most visited sites: only if you press "Add Sites", your browser's list of your most visited sites is read once on this computer to add them as shortcuts. The permission is then given back; the list is not sent anywhere.
• Site favicons (Chrome and Edge only): only if you turn on "Use Site Favicons", Duo New Tab shows icons from the browser's local favicon cache. Firefox has no such cache, so there the setting asks for no permission.
In Firefox, the install prompt lists the data Duo New Tab sends to the online services above, as Firefox asks every add-on to declare: location (the place for the Weather widget, to Open-Meteo and BigDataCloud) and browsing activity (the addresses of the sites on your Home Screen, to Apple's App Store search and Google's favicon service). Turning those features off, as described under "Your choices", stops it.
GOOGLE ANALYTICS (WEBSITE ONLY)
The duotab.app website uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits. The extension does not use it, in any browser.
YOUR CHOICES
Turn off "App Store Icons" and "Site Icons" in Settings, and remove the Weather widget (or choose a city instead of My Location), and Duo New Tab makes no network requests. Use "Reset Everything" in Settings, or uninstall the add-on, to delete all stored data.
CHANGES
If this policy changes, the updated text will be published at https://duotab.app/privacy/ and with the store listing.
