GoDark: Dark Mode & Night Mode for Every Website by sovkit
This extension does not collect, store, or share any personal or sensitive user data. Pages are darkened right on your device: their content never leaves it, and there is no analytics, tracking, or advertising.
Permissions
• storage — Used to save your settings (the main switch, where and when dark mode turns on, the default mode, appearance and colors), your site lists and per-site rules, theme, language, whether the toolbar icon opens a popup or the side panel, and license status locally on the device. Whether each open tab is currently darkened is kept in session storage only, to show the toolbar icon's state, and is cleared when the browser closes. If you set up your own storage endpoint, its credentials are kept here too and never leave the device.
• alarms — Used to schedule the optional sync in the background, periodic license refresh, and checks for product notices.
• scripting — Used to run the dark mode scripts only on the websites you have given access to: they are registered for exactly those sites, and the registration is removed when you take access back, including from your browser's settings. Right after you grant access, the same scripts are added to pages of those sites that are already open, so they turn dark without a reload. It is also used to recognize pages the browser does not let extensions change, such as its own settings pages and extension stores, so the extension's interface can explain why dark mode cannot apply there instead of showing a switch that seems to do nothing.
• activeTab — When you click the toolbar icon, this lets the extension read the address of the current tab, so its interface can show which site you are on and offer to give that site access. The address is used only on your device. No tabs, history, or cookies permission is requested.
• Optional host access (http:///, https:///) — Core functionality, but nothing is granted at install time. The extension asks for access through your browser's own prompt only when you choose Allow all sites or Only this site, and you can take it back at any time in your browser's settings. Pages are darkened only on the websites you have allowed. The same access lets the extension fetch a page's stylesheets and images as described below; when only individual sites are allowed, files hosted on other domains may be out of reach, so some pages may look less complete in dark mode. If you set up your own storage endpoint, access to that one address is requested when you save it.
• sidePanel (Chromium-based browsers only) — Used to open the extension's side panel when you choose it as the view the toolbar icon opens. The extension's interface appears in either a popup or the side panel, with the same content in both. On Firefox the side panel is provided by sidebar_action, which needs no permission.
• Optional data collection (personallyIdentifyingInfo, Firefox only) — Requested only when you upgrade to Pro, because your email address is then sent to our license service. Nothing is requested at install time.
How pages are darkened
On each page of a site you have allowed, the content scripts read the page's colors and styles and rewrite them into a dark version, or invert the page as a whole if you choose the Invert mode. They also check whether a site already has a dark theme of its own, so it is not darkened twice. All of this happens inside the page; nothing about the page is stored or sent anywhere.
Some sites load their stylesheets or images from another domain, and the page itself is not allowed to read those files. To work out dark colors for them, the extension's background requests the same files directly from the servers the page loads them from. These requests carry no cookies or other credentials, are limited to ordinary web (http and https) addresses, and the results are used only on your device and never passed to us or to any third party.
Fixes that adjust the dark theme for particular websites ship inside the extension and are never downloaded from the network.
Local data storage
Your settings, site lists and per-site rules are stored in the browser's local extension storage, together with the date you last had a page darkened, which is used only to decide when to show an occasional review request. The darkened state of each tab lives in session storage and disappears when the browser closes. Nothing is kept about the pages you visit, and everything is removed when the extension is uninstalled.
Bring your own storage
Cross-device sync is optional and off by default. When you turn it on, you supply your own storage endpoint, and your settings — the main switch, where and when dark mode turns on, the default mode, appearance and colors, your site lists and per-site rules, plus theme, language, and whether the toolbar icon opens a popup or the side panel — are exchanged directly between your devices and that endpoint. We operate no sync server, never receive that data, and never see the endpoint's credentials — they are stored only on your device.
Network communication
Apart from the page resources described above and a storage endpoint you configure yourself, the extension only communicates with our first-party servers and our payment provider. api.sovkit.com handles optional Pro license management, which occurs when the user explicitly initiates a purchase or activates a license key; the only data sent is the license key, a device identifier, and an email address during checkout. The device identifier is a hash of a random value generated locally, not derived from your hardware. Payment is processed by Creem, which receives your email address and license key for the purchase. data.sovkit.com hosts a static announcement file that the extension downloads periodically to show product notices; this request sends no data about you and returns the same file for everyone. No page content, browsing history, or other personal information is ever transmitted.
