Version 0.1.6 · Effective date: 19 October 2026
Neo — Twitter, on your terms is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox published by Neow. Neo customizes the X/Twitter website using preferences you choose in your browser.
Information Neo handles
- Your preferences: enabled/paused state, selected preset, appearance choices, distraction controls, keyword filters, account-handle filters, and the optional list of regions to block.
- Website content: displayed post text, author handles, repost and promoted-post indicators, X's verification badges, and the interface elements needed to filter and style the feed.
- Videos you choose to download: the post's ID and author, and the list of video files X offers for that post, used only to save the file you pick.
- Problem reports you choose to send: what you write, the email address you give for a reply if you give one, and the screenshot you attach if you attach one, described under Reporting a problem.
- Current page information: the current X/Twitter page path and post links, used to identify Home and post-detail views.
This information is processed locally to provide Neo's filtering and appearance features. Neo does not read passwords, authentication-token cookies, direct-message conversations, payment details, precise location, or your browser's history. When optional account-region lookups or follow checks are in use, Neo reads the ct0 request-verification cookie only to authenticate normal account-data requests to X. This value is used only in memory and is never logged, stored, or sent to another service. Video downloads use the same value, or X's own guest-token cookie when you are signed out, in the same way. Neo also reads the twid cookie, which holds your X account's numeric ID, so it can recognize your own account where X's page doesn't show your handle (as on phones): follow checks then count you as followed, so your own replies are never hidden, and auto-block never blocks you. Neo compares this ID only with the IDs in X's own answers; it is used only in memory and is never logged, stored, or sent anywhere.
Storage and retention
Your preferences and filter lists are saved in the extension's local storage in this browser until you change or reset them, clear the extension's storage, or uninstall Neo. Neo does not use the browser's sync storage. Displayed post information and filter signatures are processed in the current page's memory and DOM; Neo does not save a post archive in extension storage.
To show how much it hid, Neo counts the ads, other posts, and region-matched posts it hides. This browser session's counts, with the handles of region-matched authors so each is counted once, are kept in the extension's session storage and cleared when you close the browser. Running totals of the counts only, without handles or post content, are kept in the extension's local storage until you choose Clear counts in Activity, clear extension storage, or uninstall Neo. The counts never leave your browser.
The optional account-region feature loads X's public “Account based in” value directly from X's account API. Inline mode loads authors visible in your feed automatically; hover mode loads an account when its normal X hover card appears. No new tabs are opened. Requests use your browser's normal X session and are paused when X rate-limits them. Neo stores up to 200 author handles with their public country or region and lookup time locally. Cached results are reused for 24 hours; expired entries are removed on the next successful lookup or when you reset settings or clear extension storage. No country is inferred from a name, profile biography, or language. X's value may be unavailable or inaccurate.
You can list regions and choose what happens to matching authors. With Hide posts, Neo hides their posts in your browser and changes nothing on X; if you click Block on one of those posts, Neo sends X's normal block request for that author only. The optional auto-block by region choice, off by default, changes your X account: when an author you scroll past has an X-reported region that exactly matches one you listed, Neo asks X to block that account using your browser's normal X session. Your own account and regions X marks as possibly inaccurate are skipped. Accounts you follow are also skipped unless you turn that protection off: for each matching author, Neo asks X's friendship lookup whether you follow them and blocks only when X confirms you don't. This answer is kept in the page's memory only. Blocks are limited to one every 2 seconds and 30 per hour, and pause when X rate-limits them. Neo stores up to 500 handles it blocked, with the matched region, the time, and whether you or auto-block asked for it, so it does not block an account twice; you can clear that list in Regions & blocking. The Preview only choice is a dry run of auto-block: it makes the same region and follow checks but sends no block request and hides nothing, and keeps up to 200 matching handles, with region and time, in this browser session's storage so the settings page can list them; the list is cleared when the browser closes. If X rate-limits blocks, or the hourly limit is reached, Neo keeps the pause time and its reason in session storage to show it in settings. Clearing the list, pausing, or uninstalling Neo does not unblock anyone; unblock accounts in X's own settings. The optional skip-confirmation setting only presses X's own confirm button after you choose Block.
The optional Hide Premium replies and Hide organization replies switches, off by default, hide replies below a post you open whose author shows X's blue or gold verification badge, but only when you don't follow that author. Neo recognizes a badge by its shape on the page. To learn whether you follow a reply's author, Neo asks X's friendship lookup, the same request the follow protection above uses, for up to 100 authors at once, using your browser's normal X session. The answers are kept in the page's memory for 30 minutes and are never saved or sent anywhere else. If X can't confirm that you don't follow an author, the reply stays. Nothing is asked while both switches are off. The opened post, the conversation above it, its author's replies, and your own are never hidden.
Video downloading adds a download button to posts with a video or GIF. Neo asks X about a post only when you click that button: it sends X's normal post request for that one post using your browser's normal X session, so X decides which media your account may see. The answer is kept in the page's memory for up to 10 minutes and is not saved. The file you pick is downloaded by your browser directly from X's video server to your Downloads folder, named Neo_username_postID_resolution.mp4. Saving files uses the browser's optional downloads permission, which Neo asks for only when you allow downloads in its settings, and which turning the feature off gives back. Neo uses it only for downloads it starts. For this browser session, Neo remembers the ID numbers of those downloads so it can show their progress; it does not keep the video addresses. If X has changed its post request, Neo reads the X web-app file the page already loaded to find the current one; that file is read as text and never run. Videos X offers only as a stream are not downloaded.
Neo's changes occur inside the X/Twitter page. Like other modifications to a website's document, the modified DOM and inserted filter explanations may be observable by that website. Neo does not send your settings to a server, and sends post text only inside a screenshot you choose to attach to a problem report. When you use account-region lookups, X receives the normal account-data request for the selected author. When Neo checks whether you follow an author, X receives its normal friendship lookup. When auto-block by region is on, X receives a block request for each matching author. When you download a video, X receives the post request and, from your browser, the request for the video file.
Sharing and external services
Neo does not transmit your preferences, filters, post content, or browsing information to the publisher or third-party servers. The one exception is a problem report you choose to send, which goes to the publisher only and contains only what is described under Reporting a problem. Neo does not include analytics, tracking, advertising services, or remotely loaded executable code. The publisher does not sell your data, share it with third parties, or use it for advertising or for anything other than answering and fixing the problems you report.
X/Twitter continues to operate under its own privacy practices. Neo does not control the data the website itself collects or sends. If you choose to contact the publisher, your email provider or support service handles the information you choose to submit under that service's practices.
Reporting a problem
Report a problem opens a form in Neo. Nothing is sent unless you choose Send report. A report then goes to the publisher's report service at admin.neow.pro and contains: the description you write; the email address you give for a reply, if any; the screenshot you attach, if any; and short details shown on the form: Neo's version, your browser and its major version, Neo's language, and where in Neo you opened the form. When the screenshot is of an X page, the report also names that page's address without anything after a question mark or #. A report never includes your settings, filters, muted words or accounts, cookies, or X account details, beyond what a screenshot you attach happens to show.
When you open Report a problem from Neo's toolbar button while the current tab is on x.com or twitter.com, Neo takes one screenshot of that visible tab, using the activeTab permission that your click grants for that tab. Neo shows you the screenshot on the form, and you can remove it before sending. Neo never captures other sites or captures in the background. Pictures you choose or paste instead are redrawn in your browser, which removes their metadata, such as location or camera details. A screenshot shows whatever was on the screen, so check it before you send it.
In Firefox, Firefox also asks your permission before Neo sends a report, for the kinds of information that report carries: the technical details always, and your email address, the screenshot, and the page address when the report includes them. If you decline, nothing is sent. You can change this later in Firefox's add-on settings (about:addons), under Permissions and data. Chrome has no such prompt; there, choosing Send report is your permission.
The report service keeps each report for 180 days and then deletes it. To limit abuse, it keeps a keyed hash of the sending IP address with the report, never the address itself. Only the publisher can read reports, through a signed-in dashboard. If you give an email address, the publisher uses it only to reply about your report. To have a report deleted sooner, email the publisher. Send by email instead, on the same form, opens a draft email in your own email app, which your email provider handles under its own practices. The Neo website, privacy policy, and store links (the Chrome Web Store, or Firefox Add-ons in Firefox) open only when you click them.
Importing and exporting your setup
An exported JSON backup contains your preferences, muted words and phrases, muted author handles, and blocked regions. It is downloaded only when you choose Export settings. Anyone you share the backup with can read those fields. Imported files are read locally and validated before their supported settings are saved. Neo does not upload backup files.
Your controls
You can inspect, edit, or delete individual filters, pause Neo, export your setup, or choose Settings → Reset settings to restore default preferences and clear saved filter lists and the public-region cache. Resetting does not remove backups you previously downloaded. Uninstalling removes the extension's browser-managed storage.
Updates to this policy
The publisher will update this policy when Neo's data practices change and revise the effective date. New data-handling features will require updated disclosures.
