About this extension
An unofficial add-on for the [WHO Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence Hub news map] (https://portal.who.int/pandemichub/newsmap) , built for people who keep the map open on a monitoring screen all day.
This add-on is not affiliated with or endorsed by WHO, the European Commission JRC, or the EIOS initiative. All news content and map data remain those of the original site.
Appearance
- Green-gray dark theme for the header, ticker, article list, pop-ups and dialogs
- Dark map: the official WHO base map is kept (boundaries and labels unchanged) and only recolored; red event markers keep their original colors
- Cleaner system fonts for Latin, Chinese and Arabic scripts
Reading
- Arabic and other right-to-left headlines are laid out correctly
- The pop-up title on the map links to the original article
- Pause the news ticker by hovering over it
- Choose how long each article stays on screen (10–60 seconds)
- Automatically dismiss the "small screen" warning
- Broken source icons are hidden; long pop-up text can be scrolled
Automatic topic rotation
- When all articles of a topic have been shown, the map switches to the next topic from the "Change Topic" menu
- The next topic is preloaded in the background, so switching is instant and the page is not reloaded
- Topics with no articles are skipped
- Choose Selected Topics, Trending Topics, or both, and how many rounds each topic plays
Optional English headline translation
- Many headlines already come with an English translation from EIOS; these are shown under the original title at no cost
- For the remaining non-English, non-Chinese headlines (often Arabic), you can add your own Google Gemini API key (works with the free tier; gemini-3.5-flash-lite or gemma-4-26b-a4b-it)
- Built to save quota: headlines are batched into one request, translations are cached and never requested twice, requests are spaced out, and you can set a daily limit
- Only public headline text is sent to Google, and only after you grant consent in the settings panel. See the privacy policy for details.
All settings take effect immediately from the toolbar button.
