Privacy policy for Reword: AI Message Polisher
Reword: AI Message Polisher, Privacy Policy
Effective 14 October 2026
Short version: Reword has no servers of its own. It does not collect analytics, track you, or sell anything. The text you choose to rewrite is sent only to the AI provider you pick, using your own account. Everything else stays in your browser.
What Reword stores, and where
All of the following is stored only in your Firefox profile (browser extension storage). It is never sent to the developer.
- Your settings (interface mode, default action, output format, signature).
- Your AI access: the API key created when you log in with OpenRouter, or API keys you paste for Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic Claude or xAI Grok.
- Your current draft in the Reword window (message, result, chosen options), so it is not lost when the popup closes.
- Lists of available AI models and their prices.
- For auto-paste: a one-way fingerprint (SHA-256 hash) of the last clipboard text Reword saw, so it doesn't paste the same text twice. The clipboard text itself is not stored this way.
Removing the extension deletes all of this data.
What Reword sends, and to whom
- The text you ask Reword to rewrite, plus instructions describing the task (for example "polish this for Google Chat"). Sent only to the AI provider you selected (OpenRouter, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic or xAI), and only when you click Generate or choose an action from the right-click menu or the Reword button.
- Your API key for that provider. Sent to the same provider with each request, to authorise it.
- A request for the list of available models. Sent to the provider whose models you load, when you add a key, log in, or click "Load models".
Requests go directly from your browser to the provider. The developer of Reword never receives your text, keys or results. How each provider handles your data is governed by its own terms and privacy policy, and some free plans may allow the provider to use submitted content to improve its services. Please review the terms of the provider you use:
- OpenRouter privacy policy
- Google Gemini API terms
- OpenAI privacy policy
- Anthropic privacy policy
- xAI privacy policy
Avoid sending confidential or personal information about others unless your provider's terms permit it.
Clipboard
If auto-paste is on (it can be turned off in Settings), Reword reads your clipboard when you open it and places newly copied text into the message box. Clipboard text is not sent anywhere unless you then choose to generate a result with it. When you click Copy, Reword writes the result to your clipboard.
Web pages
Reword does not collect the content of the pages you visit. When you use the right-click menu or the Reword button, Reword reads only the text you selected (or the text box you used) and replaces it with the result. It also checks the page's address and the type of text box to choose a matching format (for example Google Chat, Slack, WhatsApp or email formatting, or whether a Redmine site uses Textile or Markdown). Nothing about the page is stored or sent other than the text you chose to rewrite.
Reword button next to selected text
To show the Reword button when you select text in a text box, Reword asks Firefox for access to all websites at install. A small script runs on pages you visit and only checks whether you have selected text inside a text box, so it can place the button next to your selection. It does not read, store or send page content. Text is only read and sent to your AI provider when you click an action on the button, exactly as with the right-click menu. You can turn the button off in Settings or hide it on specific sites at any time; turning it off stops the script.
Logging in with OpenRouter
"Log in with OpenRouter" uses OpenRouter's official authorisation flow (OAuth with PKCE). You sign in on OpenRouter's own website; Reword never sees your OpenRouter password. OpenRouter then gives Reword an API key that is stored in your browser. You can delete that key at any time in your OpenRouter account, and "Log out" in Reword removes it from your browser.
Permissions
- Storage: saves your settings, keys and draft in your browser.
- Identity: opens the OpenRouter login window.
- Clipboard read / write: auto-paste and the Copy button.
- Menus, active tab, scripting: the right-click menu and rewriting selected text on the page you're using.
- Access to all websites: shows the Reword button next to text you select in a text box, and lets the right-click and button actions rewrite text on the page you're using.
- Access to openrouter.ai, api.openai.com, api.anthropic.com, generativelanguage.googleapis.com and api.x.ai: sending requests to the AI provider you choose.
