wouldn't load. when it did, it was sluggish. when i finally was able to click to connect, it popped up just as i did it, blocking me, begging me to review this product i pay a substantial amount of money to use every year. here's your review. i hope you're happy. but knowing it, it won't even stop popping up asking me to review it, will it?

Every 10 minutes or so when connected to a Proton VPN server with the extension, all websites stop working and the extension just displays a continuous loading icon when opened. This can only be fixed by either turning the extension off and back on again, or completely closing Firefox and reopening.

Slowed down my Firefox connection by 90% ~10Mbps.
Not seamlessly integrated with Windows Proton VPN apps, working separately.
Split tunnel doesn't always work.
Overall proton VPN performs better than Mozilla VPN but this extension definitely needs more work.

Only using this extension because Proton's actual native software pipeline on Arch-based distros is an unmitigated mess. The standalone protonvpn-cli is essentially abandoned to Python dependency rot, and the official GTK desktop app crashes on startup over basic package mismatches like pydantic-core. Having to downgrade a paid system-wide VPN down to a basic browser addon just to get a functional connection on an Arch-based system is ridiculous.

EDIT: The details are already in the review. The issue isn't my desktop environment; it's that Proton's native Linux app stack relies on uncontainerized, unpinned Python site-packages that break on modern Python 3.14 runtimes. Stop asking for screenshots of known upstream packaging failures and pin your dependencies so rolling-release users don't have to rely on Proton's browser proxy.

Actual dead weight for my browser, this extension seems to only work when it wants to and its not often it does. I'm constantly fiddling it because it'll randomly stop working completely and make me lose access to the internet.

Does not load, constant spinning circles.

App is Silently Crashing constantly while in use. The icon on the toolbar will be lit up green like it's connected and working fine, but no website will load, so I'll click on the extension and will just get an endless spinning wheel that never loads. This happens multiple times a day at random, making using the extension pointless.

Frequently I resume my session from suspend or hibernate on Windows, and the plugin popup window displays a spinner forever. Disabling and re-enabling the plugin does not help. Deeply unreliable.

Up until recently, Proton VPN has been a GREAT option for me. It was the only free VPN I trusted and used and it worked great. However as of yesterday it stopped working. I've tried to uninstall it but it actually won't let me, and if I try to click on the icon/widget it is just a neverending spinning circle. Also, I keep getting a popup that says "Your networks seems to be blocking Proton. The extension can't bypass this. Try the desktop app instead"

This is very frustrating to especially since the mobile version keeps workings fine for now. I originally thought it might be a problem on my end, but apparently this has been an issue for many other people. Dropping my review so hopefully others know they aren't alone

ProtonVPN by itself is not bad, in fact it is by far the best VPN service I have used till date. But this extension? It is more worthless than a boat on land.

3. It keeps loading.

Yes, I reinstalled it multiple times.
Yes, I updated firefox.

I even rebooted once. Did not work at all. The ProtonVPN Linux CLI did though so its definitely not a network issue on my side.

As of now (26.07.17) the Proton VPN extension is unusable and a compromised service. Switching back to PIA for VPN

Recently the Firefox extension has become unstable, often reporting 'invalid refresh token' at startup. Sometime during this issue they have also taken it upon themselves to link the VPN extension info to their webmail service, which is an exceptionally fubar breach of privacy and security as it uses that info to authenticate itself, granting anyone with access to the broswer instant access to email, account information, and account settings - COMPROMISED.

Doesnt work in firefox, tried removing extension then downloading again but now i cant even log in.
When i click Sign In, i get this new tab with Error Code: PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR

In the start it worked without no problems but after restarting it for the first time the extensions begans to having problems, i couldn't acess any website in the browser however the Wi-Fi was perfectly outside it, i couldn't even properly remove it i needed to enter troubleshooting mode and after go directly to the folder and remove it, by the way this only happens with ProtonVPN since windscribe works perfectly fine for me.

What happened? I recently renewed my subscription (not for the first time), and now I'm installing the extension on a new device, but it simply won't load (it just keeps loading forever!!!). Fix this! I've been experiencing issues for months now- I have to reconnect frequently, otherwise pages won't load. There are other issues, so I won't list them all here.

It sucks because I love Proton as a service and have been a paying customer for quite awhile, but this extension has always been completely broken on Firefox and it's derivatives. Everytime I first install it, the VPN works great. However, after I restart Firefox, it can never connect again and no website will load at all whenever it says "Connected". I need to reinstall the extension in order for it to work. It doesn't matter what fork I'm on, it doesn't matter what PC I'm on, and this has been happening for years. Works great on Vivaldi which you'd expect, given the extension is pre-loaded in the browser...but cmon I'm a Firefox guy and I'd like for this to work so I can use the VPN I'm paying for on my browser of choice. Until then, I'm not paying extra for it.

if you disconnect it does nothing, you stay online, and you will just be surfing with no protection until you notice it isn't connected anymore.

Junk VPN and waste of time.
